Introduction to Sandtray Therapy

I offer a four-part training for clinicians who want to incorporate Sandtray Therapy into their therapy tool box.  I have been using Sandtray Therapy with children, adolescents, adults, and in groups for almost 10 years.  I have witnessed the power of the sandtray in assisting clients to make meaning out of past experiences, symbolize current struggles, identify mixed emotions, and envision future goals.  Sandtray Therapy can be a very healing experience for clients of all ages and is applicable to a variety of struggles such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, childhood behavior problems, grief & loss, life transitions, and so much more!

Each participant will build a series of sandtrays throughout this training.  Time for the your own experiential learning and practice is a major component of this training.

Ideal for beginner/intermediate Sandtray Therapists.

As an attendee, by the end of the training you will be able to:

  • Effectively use Sandtray Therapy with your client population (children, adolescents, adults, families, & groups)
  • Know what’s needed to set-up a Sandtray Therapy space in your office (or mobile practice)
  • Understand the basic theory of Sandtray Therapy and apply it to your work
  • Utilize a variety of non-direct, semi-direct, and direct techniques to enhance your client’s therapy experience

Conducting Psychosexual Evaluations

The vast majority of children and adolescents mature along a healthy psychosexual trajectory.  However, unfortunately for some youth, the psychosexual development is disrupted by a series of unfortunate circumstances and they go on to offend others.  This two-day training offers clinicians an introductory approach to conducting psychosexual evaluations – a necessary tool for measuring risk of recidivism and making sound clinical recommendations regarding supervision and treatment of the offender so that the victims and community are safe.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of a Psychosexual Evaluation and be familiar with the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) guidelines
  • Understand the difference between a sexually reactive child, mutual sexual exploration, and sexual aggression
  • Understand sexual deviancy
  • Be able to conduct an in-depth psychosocial interview with a sexual history component
  • Understand how to write forensically and to formulate a forensically-focused mental status
  • Be familiar with testing tools
  • Learn and practice using risk assessment tools
  • Formulate a risk level for each client with accompanying clinical formulation and treatment recommendations

  • Lauren does a fantastic job of illustrating and demonstrating how a sand tray can be a useful tool in therapy. While her focus is typically on children, she clarifies that it is also a useful tool in clinical therapy with adults. Within the small group setting where she trains, the participants are given ample opportunity to ask questions, start discussions and receive feedback from both Lauren and the group. Over the four sessions, various tools were introduced to encourage clients to consider their trays and what may (or may not) be happening for them. These are typically based on Jungian concepts/ideas. Attendees complete their own trays to consider and apply, if they like, concepts that were learned during the session. Lauren has an ease about her that makes the trainings fun, interesting and comfortable so that you can tap into your own psyche (if you are open to that!)

  • What a wonderful training! I had no prior experience with Sandtray. After this training, I felt very confident in my ability to begin implementing it right away with clients. The experientials were great ways to gain perspective from both roles as the client and therapist. I would highly recommend this training for those who are just starting out, or wanting to sharpen their Sandtray skills

  • I attended Lauren's Sandtray Therapy training this past fall. It provided an in-depth overview of sandtray therapy and Jungian psychology, giving me ways to integrate sandtray into my practice, and better understand the theories behind it. The workshop was hands-on, interactive, and full of great resources to add to my therapy "tool kit!"

  • Lauren’s knowledge and experience with conducting an evaluation for sexually offending youth made this 2 day training efficient and informative. Lauren’s small class sizes lend to the ability for participants to ask questions, share experiences and engage in conversations for feedback in a cohesive environment. The training is intense and Lauren’s awareness of her audience keeps everyone on track by allowing breaks and discussion as needed. Lauren offers resources and suggestions at the end of the training in order to allow attendees to determine their next steps. A fantastic, informative and efficient training!
