Psychosexual Evaluations of Youth with Sexual Behavior Problems

A psychosexual evaluation is a court-mandated report generated from the legal proceedings of a youth who was found involved by the authorities in the sexual offending of others.  In some cases, individuals who are found involved in sexual offending by the authorities, voluntarily agree to participate in a psychosexual evaluation and thus, do not require a court-mandate.  Nonetheless, in order to be eligible for this type of evaluation, there must be a known offense of either a hands-on nature, voyeurism, exhibitionism, child pornography, or other paraphilic behavior that has been reported to and deemed by the authorities as a credible sexual offense.

I have extensive training and expertise in performing psychosexual evaluations of children, adolescents, and young adults.

The purpose of a psychosexual evaluation is not to determine guilt or innocence, but to determine possible etiological factors that led to the abuse, assess the youth’s risk of recidivism, and make necessary treatment recommendations.  The psychosexual evaluation is strictly a forensic evaluation.  Thus, one would not request a psychosexual on behalf of a child, prior to the guilt or innocence phase as it could lead to a youth incriminating himself or exposing additional acts of criminality as the interview is geared towards ascertaining this type of information.

In order to ensure the highest quality of evaluation, evaluees and their families can expect the following:

  • A kind, caring approach to their child in an office space that promotes a sense of safety and well-being

  • Five one-hour interview sessions

  • Testing to screen for a variety of problems such as anxiety or depression

  • A caregiver interview without the child present

  • A risk level given

  • A discussion between the evaluator, caregiver, and youth regarding the findings of the evaluation

  • Collaboration between the evaluator and all persons involved in your youth’s case such as your attorney, case manager, probation officer, etc.

  • The opportunity to remain with the evaluator for specialized treatment post evaluation should you choose to do so

Fees:

Psychosexual Evaluation: Interview time & written report, $2000.00

Court Testimony: Available upon request, $120 per hour

Treatment for youth post assessment: Individual counseling sessions, $120 per hour, sliding scale fees available.  Some insurance coverage may be used.  Youth may be eligible for alternate funding sources.

Psychosocial Assessments

Psychosocial assessments are requested by a caregiver, case manager, or foster care worker if/when a youth needs treatment and/or placement recommendations; the treatment team is typically seeking the advice of a mental health clinician with regard to diagnostic impressions, targets of mental health treatment, recommendations regarding appropriate levels of care, and additional ideas regarding community supports for the youth such as mentoring, vocational training, religious/spiritual life, etc..

I APPROACH EACH YOUTH WITH A WARMTH AND KINDNESS THAT FOSTERS STRONG RAPPORT FROM THE START

I recognize the importance in obtaining the youth’s perspective with regard to what he or she feels they need in order to reach optimal functioning.  However, I also value the input of the treatment team and recognize that there may exist some disagreement between what a youth desires for him or herself versus what the treatment team is recommending.  I am comfortable navigating these often tenuous situations and have a strong record of assisting the entire team, youth included, with reaching an agreeable set of recommendations and plan moving forward.

In order to ensure the highest quality of assessment, evaluees, their families, and treatment team members can expect the following:

  • A kind, caring approach in an office space that promotes a sense of safety and well-being

  • Three, one-hour interview sessions

  • A caregiver interview without the child present

  • Testing to screen for a variety of problems such as anxiety or depression

  • Discussion of the assessment results with the youth, his or her family, and the treatment team
